Apple facing huge chip patent bill after losing case

An iPhone 6Image copyrightGetty Images
Apple faces a bill of $862m (£565m) after losing a patent lawsuit.
The University of Wisconsin successfully claimed that Apple used its microchip technology without permission in some iPhones and iPads.
The patent, filed in 1998, is said to improve the power efficiency of microchips.
The case relates to use of the technology in the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus - but an additional lawsuit making the same claim against Apple's newest models, the 6S and 6S Plus, has also been filed.

Apple removes several apps that could spy on encrypted traffic

Apple has purged its iOS App Store of several titles that it said had the ability to compromise encrypted connections between end users and the servers they connect to. The company advised users to uninstall the apps from their iPhones and iPads to prevent potentially harmful monitoring, but it has yet to name any of the offending titles.

Samsung vs. TSMC: Comparing the battery life of two Apple A9s

Many consumer electronics companies, Apple included, use parts sourced from multiple manufacturers to meet demand for their products. You can make and sell more iPhones if you're buying screens from two companies, and that also insulates you from risk if there's something wrong with one company's components. Parts sourced from multiple manufacturers will inevitably behave a little differently, but, as long as the differences are small, people aren't really going to notice or care.

NEW IPHONE MEANS WE’LL SOON ESCAPE THE CAPTIVITY OF CARRIERS

GOOGLE AND APPLE WOULD MAKE CELL SERVICE BETTER BY BIDDING STORY

Google and Apple have pushed us closer to a world in which we’re freed from the tyranny of wireless carriers. Declan Ganley wants to take us all the way there.
With its latest Android phones, Google is offering a wireless service, dubbed Project Fi, that automatically switches between Sprint and T-Mobile, depending upon whose signal is strongest. In every new iPad, Apple now offers a SIM card that lets you try various providers—including Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T—before choosing one. In some cases, you can just as easily drop one carrier for another.
Wielding the power that comes with building the world’s most popular phones, Google and Apple are moving us toward a world where we can move seamlessly between carriers from month to month, day to day, even moment to moment.
As a consumer, you want this. You don’t want a single carrier maintaining an inordinate level of control over the networks you use and how much you pay. You want a market with unfettered competition, where you can jump from carrier to carrier as need be. And that’s what Ganley is trying to build.
Ganley is the CEO of Rivada Networks. On its webpage, Rivada describes itself as a company that designs “public safety” wireless networks—communications systems that police, firefighters and other first responders can use in an emergency. But its mission is larger than that. In tackling public safety networks, the company has created technology that lets companies freely bid on available wireless infrastructure, and it hopes to bring this to the wireless networks the rest of us use.
In other words, it wants to create a truly free market for wireless service, one in which companies like Apple and Google bid for the use of services from Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and beyond.

Apple Bans iFixit Developer Account and Removes App After Apple TV Teardown

After the new fourth-generation Apple TV was announced on September 9, Apple provided developers with Apple TV Dev Kits to be used to create tvOS apps for the device. Teardown site iFixit took apart one of those Apple TV units meant for developers and has now run into some repercussions for doing so.

According to a post on the iFixit blog, the teardown, which unveiled all of the internal components of the new Apple TV, violated Apple's terms and conditions. As a result, iFixit's developer account was banned, leading to the removal of the iFixit app from the App Store.
