The Kwara State Government has cancelled the Independence Day celebration in Ilorin, the state capital, due security concerns.
Explaining the reasons for the cancellation, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Dr Muideen Akorede, said the government received genuine information on the plan to disrupt the program from outside the state adding that since the safety of the people is paramount to government; it has no option than to cancel.

The Spokesman, however, noted that the state is safe but “for certain elements in the state always hell bent on disrupting government programmes”.
While reacting to the cancellation, some citizens expressed dismay blaming it on poor governance which had been responsible for yearnings of the people.
They wondered how the event could be cancelled when parents and children are already looking forward to the event.
The government however appealed to the citizens to always be patient with the government as efforts will continue be made to protect them.
